About Cherokee and the Cherokees
An inspiring history of resilience
Not only is Cherokee a small community in the United States, it is also the capital of the federally recognized sovereign nation of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, one of three recognized Cherokee tribes and the only one in North Carolina.
Until 1838, the Cherokee People numbered more than 15,500 individuals living in harmony with nature, but in that year, the federal government forced the relocation of Native Americans to Oklahoma. They walked several thousand miles. Many did not survive the trek. But not everyone went. Some folks remained in the mountains and their descendants – as well as people who made their way back from Oklahoma – now comprise 75% of the population of Cherokee, North Carolina.
Today, Happy Holiday RV Village celebrates its Cherokee heritage by continuing to emphasize living in harmony with the environment and placing family, including our RV family, first. We like to think of campers as ‘Nunnehi’… travelers with kindred spirits and we welcome you to our beautiful and bountiful native land.
